Preparing Your Static Caravan for the Colder Months: An Owner’s Checklist

As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to drop, it’s a good time to give your holiday home a little extra attention. Preparing a static caravan for winter doesn’t have to be complicated, but a few simple checks can help you keep everything in order while you’re away.

Whether you’re a new owner or have enjoyed static caravan ownership for years, our winter checklist can help you prepare your holiday home for the colder months.

Check your heating

Before the really cold weather arrives, make sure your heating system is working as it should. Turn it on and check that radiators or heaters are operating properly.

If your caravan has a gas heating system, ensure it is serviced and maintained in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and any requirements set by the park. Never attempt repairs or modifications yourself if they require a qualified professional.

It’s also worth checking that heating controls and thermostats are working correctly, so your caravan is ready for your next visit.

Keep ventilation in mind

It might seem tempting to close everything up tightly during the winter, but good ventilation is important in a holiday home. Adequate airflow can help reduce condensation and keep the interior feeling fresh.

Check any vents to make sure they are clear and unobstructed. Avoid covering or blocking permanent ventilation openings and always follow the guidance provided for your particular caravan.

Check windows, doors and seals

Take a few minutes to inspect your windows and external doors. Look for any obvious gaps, damage or deterioration around the seals.

Good seals help keep cold air and moisture outside while making your caravan more comfortable when you return. If you spot anything that needs attention, check your manufacturer’s guidance or speak to an appropriate professional rather than attempting a repair you’re unsure about.

It’s also worth checking that windows and doors close securely before leaving your caravan.

Protect your pipes

Cold weather can create additional risks for plumbing, so checking your caravan’s water system should be an important part of your static caravan winter checklist.

Follow your caravan manufacturer’s instructions and your holiday park’s guidance on whether the water system should be drained down when the caravan is not in use. Don’t assume that the same procedure applies to every model.

If you’re unsure what to do, ask the park team or consult your caravan’s handbook before making any changes.

Tidy away outdoor furniture

Autumn and winter weather can bring stronger winds and wetter conditions, so it’s worth securing or storing outdoor furniture, parasols and other loose items.

Where possible, store suitable furniture safely or secure it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t leave lightweight items where they could become damaged or blown around during bad weather.

A quick tidy-up now can make returning to your holiday home much easier.

Check the inside before you leave

Before closing up for a longer period, have a quick look around your caravan. Check cupboards, worktops and floors for any signs of damp, leaks or condensation.

It’s also a good opportunity to make sure food has been removed, bins are emptied and the caravan is left clean and tidy.

If you have any appliances that need to be switched off or disconnected during periods when the caravan isn’t occupied, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your park’s specific guidance.

Follow your park’s winter guidance

Every holiday park has its own procedures for the colder months, so your park’s guidance should always take priority alongside the manufacturer’s instructions for your caravan.

If you’re an owner at Sunnyvale Holiday Park and you’re unsure about anything, our team will be happy to point you towards the relevant guidance.

A little preparation goes a long way

Preparing a static caravan for winter is mostly about carrying out a few sensible checks before the colder weather sets in. Looking after your heating, ventilation, windows, seals, pipes and outdoor areas can help you leave your holiday home ready for the season ahead.

And when you’re ready for your next visit, you’ll know you’ve taken those extra steps to look after your home away from home.
